Editor's Notes

Our antique replica open-frame corkscrew with brush has an English 19th century design. The spiral is inserted into the cork by turning the top handle clockwise. The bottom collar of the frame assists in centering the point of the worm into the cork. Then, by turning counterclockwise, the shaft and worm, along with the cork, rise into the frame. The brush is used for cleaning the bottle neck and the bottle top after the capsule is removed. The corkscrew is available in bronze and measures 6 3/8" in height. Modern corkscrews no longer have a brush attached to them. However, stiff bristles were often placed on the end of a corkscrew between the late 18th century and middle of the 19th century. This was because the bottles were then sealed using wax, and debris would often cover the bottle when the wax was cut. Furthermore, fungi and dust would often accumulate on the cork from lengthy stays in wine cellars and the lack of climate control in those days. What our antique replica corkscrew does is give you that feel of Victorian or Edwardian England, but without the difficulties of those days. No longer are bottles wax sealed, unless you open a very old bottle of wine, but dust can happen depending on what sort of establishment you run. Most importantly, however, this corkscrew uses modern-strength bronze and ergonomic grips, which means that you can create the atmosphere of years gone by, while enjoying the benefits of modern society as a whole.
